HUGE DAY AWAY: STE-ANNE'S PLAYS SIX GAMES AWAY AS SOLITARY HOME GAME IS
CANCELLED. 28th June 2009
Even without the third team playing its scheduled game at home, this
weekend was a record for the number of SAB teams playing last Saturday. The
senior Women's team traveled with the Saints girls to Quebec City. The U 14
boys won their match, the U 18 men lost narrowly, while the Reserves won and
the Senior A squad at the last gasp.

Both the women's games in Quebec City were hard fought and in the senior
match, the score was 0 - 0 at the half. Unfortunately, a penalty goal and a
try by Quebec gave them the win 0 - 8. Meanwhile the Saints lost tiEr match
by three tries to one. Tory
played a terrific game and Lise had a stormer of a match according to our
reporter Angela Goodkouric. She thought the juniors played an especially
strong game as many of the Quebec girls were older. Way to go Saints!!!

In the men's games, the under 14s may have outscored their opponents, but
who was keeping score? The game was exciting and it was neat to see Zak
Jamieson and little little Belvedere tearing up the pitch. It helped having
the coaches on the field (thanks to Graham and Kevin) and the quality of
play was way above a high school bantam or midget game.

In the under 18s game play went back and forth with Beaconsfield scoring
the last try to take the match. James and brother Peter played strong games
in the forwards, while Ricardo showed imagination and good tactical
awareness in the backs. Number Eight
Kaplan was a force throughout the game.

The Senior Reserves struggled early on in their Beaconsfield match, but an
emotional speech by Murray seemed to fire up the team on their own goal
line. They did allow a try, but then SAB rolled back with tries at the end
of the first half and early after the changeover. Andrew showed that he is
going to be a factor this season, as he caused constant headaches for the
opposition whenever he had the ball (and, even when he didn't.)

The Ste-Anne's 1st XV took the field with much confidence. Early on, they
saw success and went up 6-0 on kicks. But Beaconsfield did not make life
easy for the Blue and
Whites, and they scored near the end of the first half to make it 6-5.

Ste-Anne's made two more kicks to take the score to 12 - 5, but Gill
responded and the score was dangerously close once again. The score became
even after another Gill penalty goal to take the score to 12-11. Ste-Anne's
did soon go ahead again 17-11, but Beaconsfield kept roaring back. They
scored a converted try to go ahead very near the end and led by 17-18.

The situation looked grim for SAB, but in what must have been injury time,
Jazz took a pass and broke through the line, feeding Matty for the winning
score.

After all the matches, there was an enjoyable time enjoyed after a good
turnout by both teams at the new Cunnninghams in the West Island
Tennis Club. After many buckets of beer, it was back to the Ste-Anne's
branch of this fine drinking establishment for a few nightcaps.

(Martin is off on his annual fishing trip and says "See you in a week. Old
School will run the BBQ, if I'm lucky.")
