SAB BEACHCOMBERS WIN INAUGURAL FRQ BEACH RUGBY
TOURNEY

11th August 2009
After a fantastic day in the sun ( even if there
were some clouds , but definitely no rain), our Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue RFC
Beachcomber Team ended up as victors at the inaugural FRQ Beach Rugby
tournament.

We played 5 preliminary games and remained
undefeated, despite some real obstacles: There were times when we had to
play without without substitutions; half of our games were played by our
all-female team, playing against all-male teams; Anita had to leave before
the end of the tournament; and then, we lost "Animal" in the first game
due to a broken toe; finally, two of our original players had to pull out
that same morning, so we were desperate to find some additional help.
Fortunately we found some good help. Jazz and Guv sprang into the breach
and answered our calls for help!
When we went into the last game of the
preliminaries we hoped that we might be able to continue our undefeated
streak ... However, the Folklor team (RCM) had other things in
mind. They played a good game and capitalized on many of our mistakes.
Even Pascal Foucault managed to cross our try line with a lovely play.
The final score was a disappointing 6-2.
But, knowing that we were in the finals against
them just 20 minutes later, we saved the best for last! That's when we we
played some incredible defense and won 2-0, with a cherry-on-the-top try
on a dummy move by Jessie.
For all of us, it was a memorable day and we hope
to encourage more Ste-Anne's teams to participate next year (as well as
more participation by Montreal clubs). The whole tournament was very well
run and moved along smoothly. It was a great way to share our love and
passion for Rugby with new found friends. .
