STE-ANNES WOMEN IN FINALS: Men's Premier Team Defeats RCM
18th August 2009
They're in the Finals. The SABRFC Senior Women's squad has made it,
yet again, to the Quebec Rugby finals. It wasn't an easy task by any
means, as their semi-finals opponents mounted a spectacular comeback to
pull within 2 points ( 27-25 ). TMR missed the points to tie up the game on
a kickable conversion.

In addition to roaring back and almost take the game at the end, TMR women
led for much of the match, going up 3-0 on a penalty kick early on, then
pulling ahead 13 - 10
before Ste-Anne's scored three tries in the second half.

Still TMR wasn't going to be easily denied and they scored twice more to
come perilously close. And, what is often overlooked in the excitement of
knock-out matches in Cup play is the fine Rugby that was played by both
teams. Both of these women's squads showed some inspired and brilliant play.

One of TMR's scores came from spreading the ball wide to score on the wing,
while in the second half SAB moved the ball up the field almost 40 metres
on one series of tight forward passes.
Now, the SAB women have a week to refocus on how they can defeat first place
Quebec City in the FRQ Women's Rugby finals in Ormstown next week. It will
be an exciting day for the entire club and one that will highlight our
energetic and exceptional women's program. The Ste-Anne's women's team is
one of the longest running and most successful Women's Rugby organizations
in the world.
Rgardless of the result in the Finals, our women players have put in hours
of hard work and this just underlines what a banner year it has been for the
Ste-Anne's Rugby Club as a whole. The terrific turnout of junior players is
a case in point, but also the
tremendous participation at practices and fundraising events. The
appearance of some of the junior girls at senior women's training this week
must surely have motivated the senior players and we are looking forward to
seeing all Club members .. .juniors, seniors and social on the supporters'
bus that will travel out to Ormstown to cheer on the Senior women's team.

Meanwhile, in Men's action, the premier team played a makeup game against
RCM. From the whistle, the Bluese spun the ball wide and the resulting
Rugby was very
entertaining and enjoyable for those fans gathered at Ecole St-Georges.

Later in the day came the word that the Irish had beaten our nemesis
the Montreal Wanderers. The results just show how competitive the Quebec
Men's league is this year and the Club hopes that all players will be out to
training and working hard this week.

After beers at the field, many Club members gathered at Graham
Jamieson's house for his once very popular demonstrations of negative
financing. His money losing fundraisers brought back memories of other
similar money-losing ventures, among them, the infamous "backwards kick."

The week was highlighted by a team meal on Friday night. The special Club
practice on Friday was due to a short supporters' tour to Appleby College in
Oakville to cheer on Gillian Florence. She played a terrific game against
South Africa and for those Club members attending, this will be an event
they will always remember. Many thanks to Val Minnett for the loan of her
van.

Please remember to check this web site regularly for updates on next weekend
as the scheduled plan is to go to the Women's finals in Ormstown on
Saturday and then travel by bus to Quebec City on Sunday. However, our
fixtures secretary will be working hard to modify and conform these
arrangements, so stay tuned.
